Welcoming Maria Bautista, Canterbury’s New Missioner Associate

As of today, January 3, Houston Canterbury has a new Missioner Associate for Texas Southern University and San Jacinto Central.  Maria Bautista Vargas will graduate in May from the University of Houston-Downtown with a B.S. in Psychology.

IMG_7573Prior to working with Houston Canterbury, Maria worked as a community organizer with The Metropolitan Organization(TMO), as well as the Youth Group Coordinator for Epiphany Episcopal Church, Houston. Maria also served as a teacher assistant at Bethany Methodist Weekday School, a Camp Counselor for City Camp in Philadelphia, and a design team member for Nuevo Amanecer.

As Houston Canterbury has grown and reached out to new communities, we identified a need for a missioner associate who could help us live into that vision.  We are delighted to welcome Maria to the team, because she is so gifted at creating hospitable spaces where young adults can come together to be companions for the journey.  Maria will focus on this work at Texas Southern University and on the southeast side of Houston through Canterbury in the Community.

If you are connected to either TSU or San Jacinto, as an alum, a student, faculty, or staff, Maria would like to connect with you!  Send her an email at mbautista@houstoncanterbury.org, or meet her in person as The Gathering gathers for the first time this semester on Sunday, January 14, at St. Luke the Evangelist (3530 Wheeler Ave, 77004).
