Meeting Jesus in Mark

Grace Hour at Bohemeo’s, November 7 & 14, 7:00 – 8:30 pm
November 7: Part 1 – How to Read a Gospel
November 14: Part 2 – Binding the Strong Man: Mark as Apocalyptic Drama
December 5: A Reading of the Gospel according to Mark @ St. Mark’s Episcopal, 6:30-8:30 pm.

Over the next two Grace Hour sessions, we will be getting to know Mark’s gospel a little better in preparation for hearing a whole bunch from Mark over the coming year.  Come and get equipped for the fast-paced journey ahead.  Mark’s gospel will transform your understanding of discipleship and shake you out of your complacency.  All you have to do is heed Jesus’ invitation, “Follow me.”

On December 5, you are invited to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (3816 Bellaire Blvd, Houston, TX 77025) for a reading of the gospel in its entirety.  Don’t worry; a variety of people will be reading and there will be an intermission with snacks.  Hear Mark as it was meant to be heard.

If you are lacking for reading at this time of the year (doubtful) or you are working on your Amazon wishlist for Christmas, you might want to add these great introductory texts for Mark’s gospel:
Meeting God in Mark: Reflections for Lent, by Rowan Williams
Yes, this is a little Lenten Reflection book, but I would say that it makes for a nice intro to Mark at any time of year.
Mark for Everyone, by NT Wright

If you are looking for good commentaries on Mark, I am partial to Adela Yarbro Collins’ Hermeneia commentary and Joel Marcus’ Anchor Bible commentary (2 volumes).  Also, M. Eugene Boring’s does not live up to the author’s name – it is surprisingly lively and quite helpful.
